Chess Champ! Utica Community Schools third grader earns state championship
Flickinger third grader earns co-championship title for her division

A Utica Community Schools third grader has earned the title one of Michigan's top chess champ.
Jade Burnham, of Flickinger Elementary, was named the state's co-champion for the kindergarten through third grade reserve section at a state chess tournament in March.
Burham won four out of five games to earn one of the seven championship titles at the in Michigan's Individual Scholastic Chess Championship.

The championship, held March 25 and 26 at Oakland University, allowed the state's best K-12 players to compete for the state title in their respective grade divisions.
The tournament is sponsored by the Michigan Chess Association.

Burnham will be joining other regional chess players this weekend for the annual Chess Championship this weekend at Henry Ford II High School.
