CTE students in Utica Community Schools honored for excellence

Two Utica Community Schools seniors have been honored as students of the year by the Macomb County Career Technical Education Administrators Associatio

Tyler Newton, of Utica High School, and Tyler Perkins, of Stevenson High School, were named students of the year for Utica Community Schools at the 27th annual Career Technical Education awards breakfast February 3.

A school valedictorian, Newton plans to attend Bowling Green State University to study business.

“Tyler is an exemplary role model both in and out of the classroom” UHS staff wrote in his nomination. “He is leaving behind a legacy of hard work, compassion and friendship.”

His CTE activities include school store management, participating in the school’s DECA chapter and serving as captain of the school’s cross country team.

A student in Stevenson’s Design and Engineering program, Perkins will be majoring in Mechanical Engineering at either Lawrence Tech University or Kettering University next school year.

“Tyler has exceptional attention to detail and is always willing to help others,” his nomination reads. “He has a passion for the inner working of a vehicle and would like to one day work in the automotive industry.”

Perkins has won multiple awards in CTE individual and team state and national tournaments and earned the SolidWorks CAD certification as early as his junior year.

In addition to honoring the two UCS students, the county CTE organization also honored the Charter Township of Shelby’s Human Resource Department for supporting work-based learning training. Clerk Avery Richardson and Director Lisa Suida have given students the opportunities to be placed in six township departments.

“This speaks volumes to the dedication they have put into making meaningful connections for our students,” the nomination reads.
