Students in Macomb County’s two International Baccalaureate schools will take their traditional classroom competition to the field next Saturday for charity, thanks to a UAIS junior.

Brenna Wyffels, a student at Utica Academy for International Studies, is organizing the second annual UAIS vs. International Academy of Macomb charity softball game set to take place June 6 at 11 a.m. at Chippewa Valley High School, 18300 19 Mile Road in Clinton Township. Admission is $3.

Money raised will go toward Muscular Dystrophy Association or the World Wildlife Fund, depending on which team wins.

The entire event has been student-planned and stems from the Creativity, Action and Service (CAS) requirement at UAIS.

In order to successfully complete the IB Diploma Program, each student must have documented 150 hours of after‐school activities (during junior and senior year) that are evenly split among creative, action and service oriented endeavors.

Last year’s inaugural event was spearheaded by UAIS student Jessie DiGiovanni.

The only two IB public schools in Macomb County, UAIS and IA Macomb were recently named Michigan’s two most academically challenging schools by The Washington Post. UAIS claimed the top spot for the past three years.
