Malow jazz band to perform at annual Detroit festival

Band to perform at noon on September 7 at the Waterford Stage, located on the river.

The Malow Junior High School Jazz Band will take centerstage at this year’s annual festival in downtown Detroit.

The band will perform at noon on September 7 at the 2015 Detroit Jazz Festival at the Records Waterford Stage, located on the river.

The 26-member Malow Jazz Band is the only junior high band to earn an invitation to the premier entertainment event. The band is under the direction of music teacher Jeffery Groth.

The Malow Jazz Band is an audition-only group comprised of eighth and ninth grade students.

The band performs at all the evening school events at Malow and select Utica Community Schools events. The group has performed twice at Cliff Bell’s Jazz Club in Detroit.

To qualify for the jazz festival, bands had to earn a “1” - or superior rating - at the MSBOA Jazz Festival and submit an audition CD.
