Meet Shelby Township's Newest Firemen

Steven Dettloff II is eager to help out the Shelby Township Fire Department and the community.

Fireman Steven Dettloff II, 25, is one of three new medic firemen joining the . The young men are undergoing basic training and will have to pass a one-year probationary period before being considered part of the force.

Dettloff said one of the most challenging aspects of his training has been coming from another department that operates differently.

"Coming here my responsibility increases," he said. "Before, I was just a pipeman and now, I'm coming in and one day I'm on the medic truck, one day I'm driving the truck, one day I'm pumping the truck. My training now has expanded greatly."

Dettloff transferred to Shelby from the city of Warren. He said he had always wanted to work for the Shelby Fire Department, so when the opportunity arose, he took it. Dettloff also plans to move to Shelby and looks forward to the prospect of living in the community he works for.

Dettloff enjoys his new responsibilities because of the cross-training experience, greater opportunities, and skills acquired that can potentially benefit the city in the long run. He is excited to be part of one of only two cities in the county that offer dive team rescue.

He is thankful for the chance to work with such a great department. "I'm very blessed to have the opportunity. I'm looking forward to a good 25 years here."

Aside from serving his community, Dettloff enjoys physical fitness and sports, and hunting.
