More than 170 Utica Community Schools graduates earn Seal of Global Language

More than 170 Utica Community Schools graduates will be honored this year for demonstrating proficiency in multiple languages.

For the second straight year, UCS graduates will receive a Seal of Global Language recognition for demonstrating a high level of proficiency in World Languages.

“This recognition is a gold standard that ensures UCS students are competitive in a global economy,” Superintendent Dr. Christine Johns said. “The seal also reflects the district’s appreciation and respect for the diversity of our students.”

This year, 174 UCS graduates earned the Seal of Global Language, an 18 percent increase over the number awarded in its first year – 2016.

Global proficiency is defined as the ability to read, write, speak and listen in more than one language.

Students must demonstrate proficiency in both English Language Arts and a World Language. Students who have a home language other than English can earn a seal by demonstrating proficiency in both languages.

Students must earn a college-ready score of three or higher on a World Language advanced placement exam, pass the nationally recognized Assessment of Performance Toward Proficiency in Language or successfully complete an International Baccalaureate exam.
