New baseball league supports UCS Superintendent's Scholarship Program

United Shore Professional Baseball League announces scholarship, other investments

A new Utica-based baseball league is stepping up to the plate when it comes to supporting the future success of Utica Community Schools graduates.

The United Shore Professional Baseball League recently announced a $1,000 contribution to the UCS Superintendent’s Scholarship Fund at Eppler Junior High School.

The League, which was holding a rally to announce its new team, made the contribution in recognition of the support is has received for its new semi-professional baseball park in downtown Utica.

“We understand what a major venue like a baseball park is to a community, and we are thrilled by the welcome we have received in Utica,” said Andy Appleby, CEO and chairman of the league.

First established in 2009, the UCS Superintendent’s Scholarship program supports students who excel in academics, display leadership, serve the community and overcome personal challenges.

Since its inception, the program has provided nearly $170,000 in scholarships to UCS graduates.

“We greatly appreciate the investment the league has made in our community and - through this donation - our students’ futures,” superintendent Dr. Christine Johns said. “The new field will add to what makes our community such a great place to live, work, learn and raise a family: safe neighborhoods, exemplary schools, outstanding services and now, professional baseball.”

The check is one of three community investments announced by league officials.

The League, through its players, will also coordinate baseball and softball field improvements throughout the district.

In addition, the League and district will coordinate an incentive program for students who read at least 25 books.

The donation and investment announcements were part of the league’s introduction of the new team names and mascots for the field, held at Eppler Junior High School.
