Nine Utica Community Schools students perform in prestigious state bands, choirs

Nine Utica Community Schools students were honored this weekend as among the best music students in the State of Michigan.

The students were selected to perform in State Honors Bands and Choirs as part of the Michigan Music Educators Conference, held in Grand Rapids.

The four band students who were selected for the weekend performance are: Rachel Lee and Michael Sekich, of Stevenson High School, Andy Lasceski, of Eppler Junior High School; and Pamella Kraemer, of Eisenhower High School.

To be selected, band students prepared an announced etude, a series of scales and sight-read during each 10 minute recorded audition

An average of over 2,700 students audition each year for the 450 plus seats in five ensembles.

In addition to the band students, five vocal music students Malow Junior High school students were selected for the statewide honors choir.

Kristina Bzhetaj, Shaniya Coffee, Kendall Bills and Daniela Gardner, of Malow Junior High School, and Delanie Gizzi, of Eisenhower High Schoool, performed as members of the Michigan School Vocal Music Association’s State Honors Choirs.

Gizzi, Bzhetaj, Coffee and Bills took part in the 7-9 Soprano/Second Soprano/Alto (SSA State) Honors Choir. The trio learned individual parts of a three-part madrigal and performed it as an ensemble in front of a judge.

Gardner participated in the 6-8 Soprano/Alto (SA) State Honors Choir.
