Peace Students Start Holiday Season Feeding Hungry Children

Peace Lutheran School students packed 13,320 meals for Kids Against Hunger.

Shelby Township, MI, December 1, 2014. Peace Lutheran School students packed 13,320 meals for Kids Against Hunger. The meals will go to feed children in our community and around the country.

On Wednesday, November 26, 2014, students in kindergarten through grade eight gathered and packaged food for Kids Against Hunger, a humanitarian food-aid organization. The students of Peace Lutheran School have been bringing in funds for the cause since September. Around $3,700 was raised in all, well over the goal of $3,000.

“I am so very proud of our students and how they have been excited to contribute to this cause,” said Principal Jill Kopper. “They have been bringing in their pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters with a joyful heart. The students also look forward to packing day, where they are hands on helping other children they do not even know. This was a great way to start our Thanksgivings by GIVING to those who have less than we do.”

Students, parents and volunteer gathered in the school gym and work in assembly lines. Wearing plastic gloves and hairnets, they measured, filled and sealed food packets.

The food packets consist of rice, soy, vitamins, vegetables and dehydrated chicken. Each packet is enough to feed 12 children or six adults. The packets were boxed, loaded onto a truck and distributed to where they are needed the most: at local area shelters, to storage for relief for natural disasters and to other countries around the world.
