A campaign to count pennies at Browning Elementary School to support leukemia patients has doubled its goal and is still going strong.
The Browning Bears raised more than $4,000 through the Pasta for Pennies program offered by Olive Garden to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
Initially setting a goal of $1,650 for the effort, the drive surpassed that amount in just the first week. Families are asked to donate pennies to their child’s classroom. The class that raises the most funds is treated to a free lunch, courtesy of the restaurant chain.

Browning students had a little help from their friends - the National Honor Society at Henry Ford II High School - which contributed nearly $600.
Pasta for Pennies is an education-based program that gives students an opportunity to make a difference in helping fight blood cancers. The program is especially meaningful for the Browning students because one of their own, a kindergarten student, is battling leukemia.
