Reaching Higher Across Generations

Area senior citizens invited to take part in UCS tutoring program

Senior citizens are asked to come back to school to share their talents with Utica Community Schools elementary students.

The district is seeking additional volunteers for its Reaching Higher across Generations tutoring program, which pairs seniors with young students to improve achievement.

More than 50 older adults are already involved in the program, working two or more hours a week in the schools to support students’ reading and writing skills.

Initiated two years ago, the program’s goals include:

-Creating opportunities for both generations to appreciate and learn from one another

-Providing avenues for seniors to benefit students by sharing their wisdom and talents

-Encouraging seniors to become active in their local schools and experience traditional and new learning initiatives that are leading to student success

The program will resume in October for the 2015-2016 school year.

The district will hold an orientation session for volunteers on Oct. 8 featuring strategies to improve student achievement and training on the technology used in classrooms.

For more information about joining the program or to register for the orientation, please call 586-797-1100.
