Scholarship program hits it out of the park for Utica Community Schools graduates

For the second straight year, the Michigan-based company, toggled, is supporting scholarships for Utica Community Schools students in recognition of every home run hit at Jimmy John’s Field.

toggled recently contributed $11,000 to the UCS Superintendent’s Scholarship Program through its 2017 Brightest Lights Home Run Challenge to support graduates pursuing careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

“We greatly appreciate our business community’s active role in supporting our students’ college and career goals,” superintendent Dr. Johns said. “Through this strong partnership with the United Shore Professional Baseball League and toggled, we remain focused on preparing next generation of leaders in STEM-based careers.”

toggled (toggled.com) is a Michigan-based company focused on providing next-generation LED lighting solutions. Its parent company, Altair (altair.com), is focused on the development and application of simulation technology to synthesize and optimize designs, processes and decisions for improved business performance.

This is the second year that the company has supported the UCS Superintendent’s Scholarship program through the USPBL. In the league’s inaugural season, toggled provided $10,000 to the superintendent’s scholarship program.

“toggled is proud to support UCS and the USPBL,” said toggled marketing director Rob Schmitz. “Through community efforts like this we hope to further fuel student interest in STEM related education as well as future careers within the discipline.”

The scholarship donation was announced at the September 10 championship game and season finale at the field in downtown Utica.

Andy Appleby, USPBL founder and president and chief executive officer of General Sports and Entertainment, said he was proud of the league’s support of more than 700 local charities.

“We are especially proud that we have such a solid relationship with Utica Community Schools, and that our collaborative efforts continue to support the families and students who have made our second season so successful,” Appleby said.

The UCS Superintendent’s Scholarship program has supported nearly 200 UCS graduates over the past eight years.

Applications for the program will be available in January with awards announced in the spring. Scholarship applications will be available on the UCS website.
