Utica High School Students Place in Top 10 at DECA International Career Development Conference in Anaheim, California

Two Utica High seniors have earned their school a Top 10 national finish in the School-based Enterprise – Retail Operations competition held at the DECA International Career Development Conference on April 26 – 29, 2017 in Anaheim, California.

The seniors, Kiah Anderson and Tyler Newton, competed against 200 school stores from across the country.

“Kiah and Tyler reflect the continued success our students are achieving at a national level,” superintendent Dr. Christine Johns said. “Their experiences in managing a successful store are preparing them for post-secondary and entrepreneurial opportunities through real-world learning experiences.”

Anderson and Newton were invited to participate in the competition at the annual conference after a 50-page application they co-wrote in February earned a National Gold Certification for the Chief Connection, Utica High’s school store.

This is the sixth consecutive year the Chief Connection has earned National Gold Certification status. The store’s advisor is marketing teacher Dana Boice.

In addition to the competition, the conference allowed the students to experience professional development sessions and networking with other School-based Enterprises during the conference.
