Shelby Board Allocates Community Development Block Grant Funds

Section 30 Drainage Project, Auburn Road reconstruction receive majority of funds.

The Shelby Township Board of Trustees allocated the township’s 2012 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds last night.  CDBG funds are distributed annually for necessary improvement projects across the township. A small percentage of the funds are also awarded to public service organizations.

The township received $149,000 from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development through Macomb County Planning and Economic Development. CDBG funds avert blight, benefit low- and mid-level income residents, and address other important community needs.

About $100,000 will be allocated to the Section 30 Drainage Project. In addition, $27,700 will go toward Auburn Road improvements, including re-construction of the street, located in the township’s southwest corner.

On Feb. 7, 17 community service organizations vied for funding. The following were selected:  McRest ($2,500); Turning Point ($1,500), Care House ($2,500), Lion’s Club ($3,000), Samaritan House ($2,100), and the Senior Chore Program ($2,700).

“The township board further prioritizes the Senior Center, library, and Lion’s Club public service projects as priority funding projects for 2012. The township provides the county with the discretion to reduce the funding allocations for the remaining public service projects as necessary,” said Trustee Paula Filar.
