Teams, whether they like to admit it or not, are beginning to look ahead to the state playoffs just a few weeks from away.

This time of year is, for most prep sports fans, the start of a month-long stretch that includes league-title chases, state playoff runs, and, in rare cases, state championships.

So, let’s not waste any time getting this exciting time of year underway.

I have to say, however, before I get started here with the upcoming week, we have to stop and take a second to congratulate the girls soccer team for a huge victory last Monday against Grosse Pointe South.

The Lady Eagles edged South, 2-1, and remain the team to beat atop the Macomb Area Conference Red Division.

Awesome job, ladies.

Now, on with the business at hand - the upcoming week.

  • lacrosse vs Grosse Pointe South, May 17, at Grosse Pointe South, 7 p.m.  If lacrosse is your thing, and even if it’s not, this promises to be a dynamite game. Ike and GPS come in as the top two teams in the Macomb Area Conference Red, with the Eagles trailing the Blue Devils by one-half game. That’s said, it’s easy to see why this match-up is a no-brainer for us to recommend.
  • softball vs Lakeview, May 18, at Lakeview, 4:30 p.m. Another matchup between the top two teams in the division. This time, though, Utica High comes in with a two-game lead in the Macomb Area Conference White. However, the Huskies have been playing well, and will look to cut that lead in half. It’s a bit of a hike to St. Clair Shores, I know, but this one will be worth the trip.
