Stevenson High School students bring home the gold at state social studies competition

Here is one for the history books.

Stevenson High School students earned 22 individual medals at this year’s Michigan Social Studies competition, capturing 16 gold, three silver and three bronze medals at the competition held in Okemos High School.

In addition, a Stevenson student team earned a gold medal in this year’s Quiz Bowl competition.

“Our students made a lasting mark on the Olympiad this year with their incredible accomplishments,” said Stevenson coach Carolyn Frischman. “They are the most talented, diverse, dedicated group of young people I could have possibly worked with this year.”

The Michigan Council for Social Studies sponsors the annual competition to increase student and teacher interest in social studies education and to provide opportunities for students and teachers to gain individual and team recognition for academic accomplishments.

Stevenson students medaled in 11 out of 19 events and took gold in eight of 19 events. Also, Sarah Flanigan’s first place graphic design entry was featured on the Olympiad’s program cover.

“I was very proud to be the captain of the team this year,” captain Nick Jakymowych said. “Our team grew in size tremendously over last year and improved its placement in events thanks to the hard work and dedication of everyone involved.”
