Student artist in Utica Community Schools is one of 100 to earn national honor

A Utica Community Schools senior will have her art work on national display after she was recognized as being among the top 100 student artists through the Scholastic Art Competition.

Maria Chodnicki, of Eisenhower High School, is among only four Michigan students honored through the Art.Write.Now D.C. 2017 for her artistic accomplishments.

“UCS students have a long record of success in the Scholastic Art competition, and Maria’s award has taken those achievements to a new level,” said superintendent Dr. Christine Johns. “Thanks to the hard work of Maria and her teachers, the quality of the UCS art program is now being prominently showcased and celebrated by national audiences.”

Chodnicki’s mixed media piece is now on display at the U.S. Department of Education headquarters through July 31. The work will then join a year-long traveling art show that will be featured at venues in Oklahoma, New York, Kentucky and Ohio.

Chodnicki’s work was originally submitted in the Scholastic Art Competition last fall, where it earned the top award – Gold Key in the mixed media category – at both the Thumb Region for regionals featured at Macomb Community College and at Nationals.

As a Gold Key national winner, Chodnicki has also been honored at a Carnegie Hall ceremony back in March and her work was on display at the Pratt Manhattan Gallery in New York. She created her work as part of an Art Foundation’s assignment with teacher Josephine Braun.

More than 330,000 works were submitted for adjudication through this year’s Scholastic Art Competition.

Chodnicki plans to pursue a degree in Design and Engineering.
