Symphony grants are music to UCS students' ears
Students took in a Motor City Symphony Orchestra Youth Concert performance thanks to grants totaling $468

Grants from Target Corporation and two regional arts organizations were music to the ears of students from Harvey and Flickinger Elementary schools.
Students were able to attend a recent performance of the Motor City Symphony Orchestra’s Youth Concert, thanks to grants worth $468.
Target Corporation provided $300 for Flickinger Elementary sixth graders to attend. A $168 grant from the Michigan Youth Arts and Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs provided funds for Harvey Elementary fifth graders.

“Attending this concert provided an exciting and unique experience that expanded and enhanced students’ knowledge and appreciation for the arts and brought to life the lessons we are learning in class about the instruments of the orchestra,” said music teacher Keri Pruse.
The concert was held at the Warren Woods Community Auditorium. Nearly 2,000 students from the Metro Detroit area were in attendance for the two performances.

Students heard excerpts from John Williams’ Star Wars, as well as Orchestra Games by Gregory Smith, which takes listeners on a musical instrument journey through Olympic-type events.
“Many students attending this concert have never heard a live orchestra performance and would not have the opportunity to do so otherwise if not for these generous grants,” Pruse said. Pruse secured the grant last the fall.
