UCS, College Board team up to support juniors in SAT transition
Parent meeting set for October 8

Utica Community Schools and the College Board are teaming up to provide parents with the tools they need to support their high school juniors in this year’s transition to the SAT.
The tools will be reviewed at a special presentation on Thursday, October 8 at 6:30 p.m. at Henry Ford II High School, 1191 Clinton River Road.
“Parents will play a key role in their child’s success on the redesigned SAT assessment this spring,” Superintendent Christine Johns said. “A strong performance on this assessment will open doors for our students when it comes to pursuing their post-secondary options and goals.”
Representatives from the College Board - who administer the test - will provide an overview of the SAT and what parents need to know to support their high school students with preparing for the exam.
While the workshop is designed for parents of high school juniors, all interested families may attend this free workshop.
The State of Michigan this year is requiring all high school juniors to be assessed on the SAT as part of the Michigan Merit Exam. Prior to this school year, juniors were required to take the ACT exam.
To support the change, UCS is providing families several areas:
- PSAT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test) - UCS has traditionally provided student access to the SAT precursor to help identify areas of strengths and improvements for students.
As part of the assessment program, the State of Michigan is providing students the opportunity to take the assessment as ninth and tenth graders. UCS is expanding this opportunity to also include all eleventh graders this fall. - Naviance and Parent Connection - UCS is one of the first Michigan school districts to provide students and families access to the college and career planning tool, Naviance.
As part of its goal to simplify the college and career process, the web-based program provides students free SAT prep classes.
Parents of students in 9th through 12th grade access student information and guides through a companion Web-based program - Family Connection. - Test Prep Materials - UCS students have access to materials that will guide them on the SAT assessment, including the official SAT practice site developed by the College Board and Khan Academy. The Khan Academy is a non-profit center that produces free practice exercises, instructional videos in such areas as math, science, computer programming and history.
- Partnership with College Board - Utica Community Schools has an established partnership with the College Board through its Advanced Placement program. This partnership and the district’s continued student access to AP programs is one indicator of success on rigorous college entrance exam.
