UCS grad among 19 earning MSU alumni scholarship

2015 Stevenson grad James Montgomery earns scholarship for MSU Honors College

A recent graduate of Utica Community Schools has received a full scholarship to attend Michigan State University beginning this fall.

James Montgomery, a 2015 graduate of Stevenson High School, said: “The scholarship offered to me was incomparable with what I got from other schools. I am so thankful to be able to pursue my education at a top tier school that offers so many research and undergraduate opportunities.”

During his time at Stevenson High School and the Utica Center for Mathematics, Science and Technology, Montgomery participated in Thunderchicken Robotics, Quiz Bowl, HOSA, soccer, and the math team. He plans to major in mechanical engineering and human biology at MSU.

Montgomery was chosen from an MSU applicant pool by the director of admissions and dean of the Honors College on the basis of his high school program, achievements and standardized test scores.

“Each year, Michigan State University receives tens of thousands of applications from bright and talented students from around the world,” said Jim Cotter, director of admissions. “Being honored with a full scholarship to attend one of the nation’s most widely recognized universities is truly exceptional.”

In all, 19 incoming MSU students will receive either a University Distinguished Scholarship or an Alumni Distinguished Scholarship. The scholarships are considered among the most competitive awards in the country. They cover full tuition, room and board, and a stipend for up to eight semesters of study. The average high school grade-point average for these scholarship recipients is approximately 4.4. The average ACT score is 35 (out of 36) and the average SAT score (critical reading plus math only) is 1540 (out of 1600).

Montgomery will join the Honors College along with more than 650 other outstanding incoming students.

“Congratulations to James for winning this highly competitive award,” said Cynthia Jackson-Elmoore, dean of the Honors College. “We are eager to welcome our incoming first-year class this fall and see how their scholarly pursuits unfold.”
