UCS senior accepted to MIT Research Science Institute

Christina Li, of Stevenson High School and UCMST, will participate in a six-week Research Science Institute project

A Utica Community Schools senior is one of 80 students in the nation taking part in a summer scientific research project at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Christina Li, of Stevenson High School and Utica Center for Mathematics, Science and Technology, will take part in a six-week Research Science Institute (RSI) sponsored by the Center for Excellence in Education.

RSI is a cost-free summer science and engineering program that combines on-campus course work in scientific theory with off-campus work in science and technology research.

Participants experience the entire research cycle from start to finish. They read the most current literature in their field, draft and execute a detailed research plan and deliver conference-style oral and written reports on their findings.

RSI scholars first participate in a week of intensive science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and humanities classes with accomplished professors. The heart of RSI is the five-week research internship where students conduct individual projects with mentors who are experienced scientists and researchers. During the final week of RSI, students prepare written and oral presentations on their research projects.

The summer research program is one of a number of honors received by Li in the area of computer science.

She was one of 80 students participating in a summer study program in 2014 at Stanford University through the Joyce Ivy Foundation.

She was also named the runner-up in the 2012-2013 NCWIT Award for Aspiration in Computing, sponsored by the National Center for Women and Information Technology (NCWIT).
