
A Utica Community Schools ninth grader helped kick off the Inaugural High School Honors Orchestra sponsored by the Oakland University’s Performing Arts Department.
Samara White, of the Utica Academy for International Studies, took part in the three-day event held in late November.
Under the direction of Oakland University Music Director Dr. Gregory Cunningham, White performed with students from other regional high schools.

A member of the UAIS band, she was nominated by her instrumental music teacher, Gaye Hofer.
Over the three days, students received expert coaching and directing from members of the symphony, Oakland University professors and other area high school conductors.

The orchestra culminated in a performance November with the professional musicians from the Oakland Symphony and Oakland University Music, Theatre and Dance students.
