UCS students dive into charity event

Stevenson High School students took a dive to help raise more than $3,000 to support Special Olympics Michigan.

Students raised $2,725 through the February 22 Polar Plunge charity event at Comerica Park to support the Special Olympics program.

The Stevenson High School Student Council is sponsoring the Michigan Association of Student Council's State Conference this year, which is also supporting Special Olympics as its Charity of the Year.

"I thought it would be a great way to raise money and still do something fun that was for a great cause," said Stevenson student Maria Muzzi. "It was fun and people were so full of energy. It was cold, but it was worth it."

Nearly 20,000 athletes participate in programs sponsored by Special Olympics Michigan.

In addition to student council, Stevenson's band and Peer to Peer program also participated.

This is the second time Stevenson has done the Polar Plunge.

"I was very excited to participate in not only jumping but also raising money for the special Olympics, said Claude Swanner. “I'm glad I got the opportunity to do so as well and I will gladly participate again next year."
