UCS students enroll in Parent University

More than 100 students take part in the program

A large group of Utica Community Schools students have a new diploma, even though they are still in an elementary school.

The students recently graduated from Parent University, a district program that encourages parents and students to interact using technology to strengthen their reading and math skills.

The program initially was offered for the first time last year with 36 students. This year, more than 100 students from seven UCS schools took part in the program.

“I thought it was wonderful,” said parent Shannon Wade. “I appreciate the support we received from staff throughout the program.”

Offered at seven elementary programs this summer, Parent University provide support for students and parents to work together in five computer programs: MyON, Discovery Education, dreambox, Xtramath, and TenMarks.

The program’s goal were to allow families to work together to keep student active in learning during the summer. Students had specific marks to reach in reading and writing.

The top male and female readers logged more than 4,000 minutes of academic time this summer.

The program has increased confidence of students for the new school year.

“I think it’s going to make things a lot easier in fourth grade,” said Wiley student Kayla Curtis said.
