UCS students get unique opportunity to experience history in words and music

Grant support eight-grade field trip for The Children of Willesden Lane

Utica Community Schools students will get an historic opportunity to see the work of an international author and concert pianist come to life.

More than 2,000 UCS eighth-graders will attend a special performance on October 12 of The Children of Willesden Lane, the story of Lisa Jura Golabek’s escape from Nazi-controlled Austria to England.

The play will be performed at Macomb Center for the Performing Arts by Lisa Jura Golabek’s daughter, Mona Golabek, an international concert pianist who co-authored the book The Children of Willesden Lane.

The play includes both a narrative presentation and a piano concert by Golabek, who has performed across the country.

The opportunity for UCS eighth-grade students is made possible by a grant from Hold On To Your Music Foundation. The grant funded the cost of the performance, professional development activities for UCS teachers and copies of the book for each student.
