UCS students honored at county MLK ceremony

UCS students win top speech, art awards at county celebration

Two Utica Community Schools students were honored for their work to celebrate the Legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr.

Makia Peyton, a sixth grader at Duncan Elementary, and Sarah Dalmer, a senior at Stevenson High School, were honored at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Celebration of Macomb County.

Peyton earned first place in a countywide oratory contest and Dalmer placed second in the program’s art contest.

Sponsored by the Interfaith Center for Racial Justice, students submitted work under the theme Silent No More.

Peyton created a video recording of a passage adapted from Dr. King’s April 16, 1963 letter from the Birmingham Jail.

Students were judged on memorization and delivery. Makia delivered the passage live at the 2016 MLK Holiday Celebration.

In honor of her first place finish, Peyton will receive a class pizza party for her entire class, sponsored by the Clinton Township Cultural Diversity Committee.

Dalmer earned the second place in the art contest for a two-dimensional piece of art that conveys her interpretation of the 2016 MLK Holiday Celebration theme: Silent No More.

Judging was based on five categories: quality of art, creativity, visual impact, adherence to the theme and following the rules.

Dalmer received a cash prize of $50 and two complimentary tickets to the celebration. Her art work will travel throughout the county as part of an exhibit.
