UCS students selected for Mackinac Island honor

Members of local scout troupe tapped to welcome end of summer guest to historic island

A group of UCS students were recently selected to help welcome guests enjoying the last days of summer on Mackinac Island.

Aiden Sheppard, Brendon Haithcock, Kevin Demisch, , Charlie Borus, and Grant and Andrew Broski were selected to serve as the Governor’s Honor Guard during the last week of August as part of their membership in the Boys Scouts.

Students served as guides to earn service hours and helped raise and lower American flags throughout the Island.

They were part of a nearly 50-member group was under the direction of former UCS teacher, Dave Verlinde.

Haithcock, of Utica High School, served as the Senior Patrol Leader for the project.


Sheppard, a Bemis Junior High School band student, performed at flag ceremonies and also was chosen as one of the top four students in the patrol to serve as an honor guard at a community open at the Governor’s Summer Residence.

Borus, of Eppler Junior High School, served as the Cannoneer for the week.
