UCS students share experiences, thoughts with Board members
Students meet with Board of Education, central administration at annual breakfast

Everything was on the table at the annual UCS student breakfast.
More than 40 high school students recently met with Utica Community Schools Board of Education members and top district administrators to share their perspectives and ideas for improvement on behalf of their classmates.
Board of Education Gene Klida encouraged students to develop important life skills by not only sharing their concerns, but also ideas on how to address the issue.
“You should never silence your voice,” she said. “You always need to be heard, but also understand that you can be part of that solution."
Students at the breakfast addressed a wide range of issues at the two-hour program, including district programs, college and career choices and their learning environment.
Dr. Christine Johns said concerns shared by students through the annual event have led to changes in the district.
“We take that information back and make it part of our planning process,” Dr. Johns said.
Students from all UCS high schools and secondary specialty programs participated in the program, held at Eisenhower High School.
Prior to the program, Eisenhower senior Miranda Traxler said that she appreciated the large number of ways high schools work to involve their students.
“Involvement creates relationship, which is what we carry on with us throughout life,” she said. “No matter what type of student, I think there is a place for everyone. A place to excel; a place to feel comfortable. UCS is the best of the best.”
