Utica Community Schools students are making a trip to Children’s Hospital a brighter experience for young patients.
UCS students recently premiered five 7-foot mosaic murals created by UCS students that will be a permanent part of the new hospital, which is scheduled to open in February in Troy.
Students from Beacon Tree Elementary, Harvey Elementary, Morgan Elementary, Shelby Junior High School and the National Art Honor Society created glass mosaic murals that depict the seasons in Michigan.
Students worked side-by-side this fall with professional muralists throughout the project. Gail Rosenbloom Kaplan, a local professional ceramic artist with ties to Pewabic Pottery, has designed and supervised the execution of many community mosaic installations throughout the metropolitan Detroit area.
UCS students also donated individual pieces of art for the hospital.
UCS had previously worked with Children’s Hospital, part of the Detroit Medical Center (DMC), on a mural at its downtown location.
