UCS students top optimist speech contest

Jack Droelle, a sixth grade student at Monfort Elementary School, recently won the Optimist Club of Shelby Township's essay contest.

Jack Droelle, a sixth grade student at Monfort Elementary School, recently won the Optimist Club of Shelby Township’s essay contest based on a theme of “Lead by Example: Reality or Fiction.”

Droelle was awarded $250.00 for the honor. In addition, the essay will be sent to the district level to be judged along with winners from other Optimist Clubs in the district. College scholarships are available for top winners at the district level.

“Jack did a wonderful job of articulating this year’s theme. He expressed himself well through the essay and deserved the honor of first place,” Club President Kevin Shaw said.

Natalie Shtogrin, a 5th Grade Student at Monfort, $150.00 earned second place and a $150 award, and Sophia Meguid a 6th Grade Student at Monfort, earned a $100 award.

The Optimist Club of Shelby Township has been participating in the Optimist Essay Contest for 8 years and has been active in the community since 2002.
