UCS teacher named Michigan Student Council Advisor of the Year

A commitment to developing student leadership has earned Utica Community Schools high school teacher Lisa Lucas the honor of Michigan’s top Student Council advisor.

Lucas, of Stevenson High Schools, has earned the Advisor of the Year title for the Michigan Association of Student Council for her work with the school’s 60 member award-winning council.

Lucas has served as an advisor for the Stevenson Student Council for the past 14 years.

“I personally owe everything I’ve accomplished to Mrs. Lucas,” said senior Christopher Homrocky. “Without her, I would just be another shy kid with no impact at his school. Essentially, she is not just an adviser or leader, but she is an inspiration to all.”

The Stevenson Student Council annually organizes events that benefit the school and it broader community.

Students are responsible annually for large school events such as Homecoming and Blood Drives. They also work closely with Stevenson feeder schools to support such activities as field day and special events.

Stevenson Student Council members annually attend state and national conferences where they participate in multiple workshops to improve their leadership skills.

The council has earned multiple awards of excellence for its activities, including a recent award for a WinterBlast community event organized for Stevenson’s feeder elementary schools.

The chapter recently hosted the 2016 statewide conference and this year members were selected to present a workshop at the state conference on how to organize a blood drive.
