Unopposed Utica Mayor Will Serve Another Term

Others vie for three council seats in November election.

will serve as ’s mayor through Dec. 31, 2013, as she will run unopposed in the Nov. 8 election.

Meanwhile, four others and incumbent Jeffrey Carter will vie for three Utica City Council positions. 

This will be Noonan’s 13th straight term as mayor of Utica. She also served on Utica City Council from 1981 to 1985. She will run again because of the region’s financial hardships, she said.

“With much of our revenue based on local real and personal property, and our additional funding tied to the sales tax as shared by the state of Michigan, the Great Recession was going to have a devastating effect on the provision of services to our residents and businesses,” Noonan said. “Remaining at the helm seemed a responsible choice in order to provide experienced and knowledgeable leadership through very difficult times.” 

Noonan said her mission throughout the new term will remain the same as it has been throughout the past 24 years in office.

“My guidance of the city has resulted in a multiplicity of projects, improvements, employee education, financial stability and a high level quality of life,” she said. “We look forward to even better days ahead."

Noonan has degrees in education and a Master of Public Administration, both from Oakland University. 

For 16 of her 24 years as mayor, Noonan taught French at Malow Junior High and Eisenhower High School, where she also co-chaired the language department.  

Charles Cuddington, Bernard Hurchalla, Barbara Montag, Faith Terenzi, and incumbent Jeffery Carter will contend for three positions on Utica City Council. These positions expire Dec. 31, 2015.
