Two students named among state's top 10 theatre students

Utica Community Schools students earned more than $650,000 in scholarship offers and nearly 200 awards at the 2015 Michigan Thespian Festival, including three of the top honors at the event.

Nearly 150 theatre students from Eisenhower, Henry Ford II, Stevenson and Utica high schools attended the annual festival at Saginaw Valley State University, held December 4 and 5.

Students had the opportunity to attend professional workshops, meet with college representatives, view performances and compete in events that were judged by college and industry professionals.

The thirteen UCS students who auditioned for college programs received a combined total of approximately $652,000 in scholarship offers.

Utica High School senior Anna Hoffman was offered the first of 15 coveted positions to the Western Michigan University Theatre Program.
Additionally, Hoffman and Henry Ford II senior Emily White were named among the top ten theatre students by the Michigan Educational Theatre Association.

All four high schools performed extremely well and collectively earned 81 Superior ratings, 93 Excellent ratings and seven Good ratings.

UCS theatre students are under the direction of teachers Dave Springer of Eisenhower High School, Kirstin Carolin of Henry Ford II, Mark Johnson of Stevenson High School and Joel Kaczmarczyk of Utica High School.
