Utica student film shown at UN global festival

A film by Utica Community Schools students is being used to promote a message of empathy to international audiences.

The Tour, created by Utica Center for Science and Industry (UCSI) students, was one of five international student films shown in late March by the United Nations at the Global Festival of Action in Bonn, Germany.

“The work of UCS students continues to make a difference in new ways,” Superintendent Dr. Christine Johns said. “Through innovation and an effective use of virtual reality technology, The Tour is sharing with international audiences the critical importance of the arts and creativity in public education.”

The Tour was featured by the UN in a showcase of virtual reality films that profiled specific challenges being faced by individuals across the globe.

The “Virtual Reality Zone” showcase used the power of immersive storytelling to inspire viewers towards increased empathy, action and positive social change.

The film was created earlier this year as part of the national 360° Filmmakers Challenge sponsored by Digital Promise, a nonprofit organization working to spur innovation in education.

The 360 Filmmakers Challenge is a first-year program that engages young people to produce 360° films that make an impact.

The Tour earned two of the top six awards in the competition, including the overall winner of the “Make Waves” Award for inspiring action for positive change.
