Zombo a Good Sport for Reading

Former UCS student and current Green Bay Packer Frank Zombo encourages reading at Oakbook Elementary.

Former Oakbrook Elementary student and current Green Bay Packer enjoyed a morning of reading at the Sterling Heights school to promote "March is Reading Month."

The Super Bowl hero caught up with some of his old teachers at a welcome breakfast sponsored by the teachers and staff, complete with green and yellow pancakes and Green Bay Packer decorations.

"It's good to see everyone here," said Zombo. "It's been a long time since I've been at this school. It's obviously changed a lot but it's a pleasure to be here and to give back."

To kick off the school day, Zombo read the school announcements and joked with some students and staff.

"I've been on ESPN's First Take on national television," said Zombo. "Doing this is more nervewracking!"

Zombo then read to each of the grades and answered questions from students and teachers.

"I'm here to get kids motivated to read," said Zombo. "As an athlete, some of the kids might look up to me. By reading to them, they might think reading is a little more important. If I can just help one kid today to become a little more interested in reading, my mission would be accomplished."

Zombo is a 2005 graduate of Stevenson High School, where he served as a wide reciever for Stevenson, setting a then-school record with 78 catches. At Central Michigan, he was a defensive end where he set the school record with 25.5 career sacks. He was a starting outside linebacker for the Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers this season.
