ST. CLAIR SHORES, MI — A St. Clair Shores couple is facing charges after throwing an explosive device on their elderly neighbor's lawn earlier this week, according to Macomb County prosecutors.
Jason Showers, 45, was charged with placing explosives near property, possession of bombs with unlawful intent, possession of firearms by a prohibited person, possession of ammunition by a prohibited person and two counts of felony firearm.
He was also charged as a fourth offense habitual offender, meaning he could face up to life in prison if convicted on any count other than felony firearm.
He was placed in jail with a $100,000 bond. His next court date is scheduled for Aug. 14.
His wife, Megan Showers, 38, was charged with placing explosives near property and possession of bombs with unlawful intent. Both counts are punishable by up to 15 years in prison.
She was placed in jail with a $2,000 bond. Her next court date is also scheduled for Aug. 14.
Prosecutors said Megan lit an explosive device before her husband threw it onto their elderly neighbor's yard. They said the red cylindrical device was written with the words "BYE BYE."
Prosecutors said the 72-year-old neighbor was able to extinguish the explosive.
Officials searched the Showers' home and found materials used to make explosive devices, as well as firearms and ammunition.
"The allegations in this case are serious and especially troubling because they involve a senior member of our community," Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido said. "My office is committed to protecting public safety and prosecuting cases where individuals are accused of endangering others."
