Baker College adds vet assistant program to fall roster

This new program is ideal for the individual who wants to work with animals and quickly hit the ground running in an entry-level job.

Baker College of Port Huron officials have announced that a veterinary assistant certificate program will be available 2015 fall quarter. Students choosing to pursue this program can take general education courses this summer. The certificate can be completed in one year.

“Veterinary assistants are valued members of the veterinary team,” said Stephanie Huss, L.V.T., director of the veterinary assistant program at Baker College of Port Huron. “This new program is ideal for the individual who wants to work with animals and quickly hit the ground running in an entry-level job.”

The veterinary assistant program prepares graduates for entry-level jobs in veterinary clinics, animal hospitals, animal shelters and zoos. Students will learn to maintain, sterilize and set up equipment, collect lab specimens, administer medication, appropriately restrain animals for physical examinations and treatments, perform basic nursing care duties, such as nail trimming and teeth cleaning, and help with client education.
