City May Hike Pool Fees To Fix Water Slide: Report

Rust damage will cost more than $19,000 to fix, says engineering firm.

ST. CLAIR SHORES, MI — The city's water slide needs some serious repairs before it opens this summer, and the City Council is considering a hike in pool fees to pay for the work, according to a media report.

A state inspector found that rust has damaged the structural steel that holds the slide, the city's parks and recreation director told the council on March 24, according to the St. Clair Shores Sentinel.

A local contractor estimates that it would cost about $19,450 to repair and repaint the water slide and the structural steel. The slide is behind City Hall.

To pay for the repairs, Greg Esler, the parks and recreation director, recommended that the city should raise the price of daily pool and water slide passes by 25 cents, and seasonal pool and water slide passes by $5, the St. Clair Shores Sentinel reported. This would raise an extra $16,250 in revene.

Two council members noted that the city paid $8,500 in 2015 for a paint job on the water slide that didn't resolve the rust problem, and they want a guarantee on any new work. The council voted to table the matter on March 24 to get more information.
