Defense Attorney, Friend of Stabbing Suspect Speak Out

The defense attorney for Shane Spatafore, the 17-year-old St. Clair Shores resident charged with , believes his client was drugged.

David Pietroski told the Macomb Daily that his client doesn't remember stabbing the 17-year-old with a kitchen knife early Monday morning during a sleepover.

Spatafore claims that when others started taking a "liquid" drug, he went to bed and was was drugged while sleeping.

“My client remembers seeing a small, 1-inch tall vial in (the victim’s) hand that supposedly contained liquid acid or LSD, I guess it’s something new these kids are doing,” Pietroski told the Macomb Daily.

A friend of Spatafore and the victim spoke to Fox 2 television about the incident.

"It is really shocking ... I have known both those kids since middle school. So to hear something like this to happen around here is amazing," Alex Beaupre told the station.

He also spoke about the incident.

"They slipped him a drug while was sleeping, and he woke up in an altered state of mind and went in the kitchen and grabbed a steak knife and started stabbing him," he said.

Both teens involved the incident are students, and the district released the following statement on its Facebook page:

"There was an incident over the holiday weekend involving two Lake Shore students. It resulted in one young man being charged with assault with intent to murder for allegedly stabbing his "best friend." As with any unfortunate circumstance- rumors and accusations spread faster than the truth. We want our parents and community to know this occurred before the first day of school and was not on school property. It is sad that two lives and families have been forever changed by this event. It was a shock for us here at Lake Shore since the accused is academically a good student and not a discipline problem. Out of respect for both families, we ask that parents and the community dispel any rumors they may hear and leave judgment to the judicial system."

Spatafore is being held in the in Macomb County Jail on $200,000 bond and will return to 40th District Court on Sept. 14. He is charged with assault with intent to murder, two counts of resisting arrest and one count of malicious destruction of property.
