Officials investigating blaze that took the life of one cat.

(Originally posted on Oct. 11, 2016) ST. CLAIR SHORES, MI — A Sunday night fire displaced eight condominium owners and took the life of a cat. Smoke was coming from the apartment-style Wedgewood Condominiums building as firefighters arrived around 8:30 p.m. Sunday in the 22000 block of Masonic Boulevard, the Macomb Daily reports.
The blaze was discovered in a utility room in the basement of the building. Firefighters got the flames under control in 19 minutes, St. Clair Shores Fire Chief George Morehouse told The Macomb Daily. All of the occupants of the building who were home at the time escaped unharmed and on their own, he said.
Four of five cats removed from the condo survived after firefighters used pet oxygen masks.
