Man Arrested After Wild Police Chase In Metro Detroit: Police

EASTPOINTE, MI — A Detroit man is facing charges after leading police on a wild chase through Macomb County on Friday morning, according to police.

Officers were called at 1:40 a.m. Friday to English Gardens near 9 Mile and Kelly in Eastpointe for a suspicious man "prowling around" inside the closed business, according to police.

The caller told officials that a landscaping truck and trailer were parked across the street, according to police.

As officers approached the garden center, they saw the truck leaving and conducted a traffic stop, according to police.

Officers found numerous plants and other items taken from the garden center inside the trailer, which did not have a license plate, according to police.

Officers spoke to the lone 38-year-old man who was driving the truck, informing him that he was under arrest, according to police.

When officers told him to get out of the truck, police said the man started up the vehicle and sped away. The officer standing at the driver's door was struck, with the truck's attached trailer running over his legs, according to police.

Officers chased the truck into Detroit, where the trailer detached from the pickup truck, scattering landscaping tools across the roadway, according to police.

The debris damaged at least one police car, according to police.

Police said the man tried to strike several police cars during the chase.

The man eventually exited the pickup and tried running away on foot, but was quickly arrested, according to police.

Police identified the man as Jeremy Johnson, who was charged with second-degree fleeing and eluding police, breaking and entering without breaking with intent, obstructing or resisting a police officer and assault with a dangerous weapon.

He was placed in jail with a $1 million bond.

The officer injured in the chase was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment and later released.
