Man Charged In Series Of Random Macomb County Stabbings: Police

ROSEVILLE, MI — A man was charged in connection with a series of random Macomb County stabbings that left one person dead and another injured, the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office said.

Officials found a woman stabbed to death with her throat slit Wednesday in the parking lot at the Belle Tire location in Roseville, prosecutors said.

Officials then learned a man was stabbed multiple times at a St. Clair Shores bus stop while they were investigating the Roseville stabbing, prosecutors said.

The man was taken to a nearby hospital where he is recovering after surgery, prosecutors said.

Shane Mitchell Burns, 31, of Washington Township, was charged with eight felonies including:

• First-degree premeditated murder (maximum penalty of life without parole)
• Assault with intent to murder (maximum penalty of life in prison)
• Felon in possession of a firearm (a five-year felony)
• Felon in possession of ammunition (a five-year felony)
• Carrying a concealed weapon (five-year felony)
• Disarming a police officer (a four-year felony)
• Two felony firearm violations (each two-year felonies)

Burns was placed in jail on a $10 million cash bond. His next court date was scheduled for May 31.

Prosecutors said Burns stabbed a woman multiple times in the rib area and fatally slit her throat with a knife in the parking lot of a Belle Tire on Gratiot Avenue in Roseville.

Burns then drove to the area of 12 Mile Road and Harper Avenue, where he approached a man waiting at a bus stop, prosecutors said. Officials said Burns attacked the man with a knife and stabbed him multiple times in the midsection.

As the man fought back, Burns got back into his car and drove away from the area, prosecutors said. Officials said the man was taken to a nearby hospital where he is recovering after surgery.

Police launched a manhunt for Burns and warned the area to watch out for Burns and the Chevrolet HHR he was driving.

A few hours later, Warren Police stopped the Chevy in the area of Van Dyke Avenue and Stephen Road and arrested Burns in connection to the random stabbings, prosecutors said.

While in custody at the Roseville Police Department, Burns began biting at his own wrists, prosecutors said.

When an officer told Burns to stop, a struggle ensued between the two that ended with Burns grabbing the officer's knife and cutting his own wrist, prosecutors said.

Officers also found a 9 mm handgun and a lot of ammunition in Burns' car, prosecutors said.

"My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families at this time," Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido said. "I can assure you justice will be served in this gruesome and horrific crime."
