Metro Detroit Trans Teen Gets Gift of Hormones from Mom: WATCH

A video of a Metro Detroit teen surprised with a box of hormones to help in the transition to female has gone viral, with retweets by famous gossip writer Perez Hilton, a gay man, and others.

BuzzFeed first reported Erica Maison’s decision to give Corey, 14, hormone replacement therapy. Born a boy, the New Baltimore teen has always identified as a female, her mother said, and had been waiting for almost three years to begin taking estrogen.

The video of the moment Corey reached behind the pillows on the couch at her mother’s instruction and found the surprise gift has been shared millions of times, and the BuzzFeed story has been viewed at least 4 million times.

“Come on, what did you do this time?” Corey says, finding a plastic bag in a video recorded by her mother.

“You know what that is?” Mom asks.

Corey’s reaction says it all as she opens the medical box containing the hormones. She appears to be ready to cry, then disappears as she goes to hug her mother.

In an interview with WJBK-TV, Erica Maison explained her decision.

As a youngster, Corey dressed up in her mother’s heels and dresses. “All little boys do that, that is a phase usually,” Erica said. “As Corey gets to be 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 years old, it didn’t stop.”

“She said, ‘Mom, I’m just like her. I am a girl,” Erica told BuzzFeed.

Erica said she assumed Corey might be gay when she began dressing as a girl, though in public she wore boy’s clothing. According to WJBK, Erica took her daughter to a gender clinic in Chicago, where she received an implant to begin hormone suppression.

“The thing for me was the journey we had ahead of us,” Erica told the TV station.

With the blessings of Corey’s doctors, she presented her with the box of estrogen.

“I felt like i was in a box for a long, long time and it was just unlocked,” Corey said.
