Michigan Girl, 4, Died After Becoming Entangled in Clothing: Police

Authorities think western Michigan girl was trying to get something out of her reach and became entangled in clothing hanging on the door.

Investigators in western Michigan think a 4-year-old girl who died after a freak accident Sunday became entangled in clothing hanging from a bedroom door.

Mikayla Rae VanderLaan died about 12:40 p.m. Tuesday at a Grand Rapids hospital. Authorities found her alone in her bedroom at a Grand Haven Township mobile home park Sunday after her mother and stepfather found her unresponsive about 6:30 p.m. and called 9-1-1, WZZM-TV reports.

Ottawa County Sheriff’s Capt. Mark Bennett told the Grand Haven Tribune the investigation is continuing, but it appears Mikayla was standing on a toy trying to get an item that was out of her reach when she became entangled in the clothing.
