Renowned Cellist to Perform at War Memorial
Robert deMaine, principal cellist with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, performs on Dec. 28. Dinner follows the concert.

The Grosse Pointe War Memorial is presenting a concert by American virtuoso cellist Robert deMaine, principal cello with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, at 4 p.m., Dec. 28, 32 Lake Shore Drive, Grosse Pointe Farms.
DeMaine will perform with Detroit Symphony Orchestra Concertmaster Hai-Xin Wu, violin, and Zhihua Tang, piano. The concert is followed by dinner at 6 p.m., prepared by the War Memorial’s Executive Chef. Tickets are $50.

Hailed by The New York Times as “an artist who makes one hang on every note,” deMaine has distinguished himself as one of the finest and most versatile instrumentalists of his generation.
He has appeared on the stages of the world’s most celebrated concert halls and his distinctions have included first prizes and awards from numerous prestigious competitions.

A fourth-generation string player, deMaine made his orchestral début at age 12 with the Oklahoma Symphony Orchestra, now the Oklahoma City Philharmonic, playing Tchaikovsky‘s Variations on a Rococo Theme, Op. 33.
He studied in a pre-college division of The Juilliard School, after which he attended the Eastman School of Music, the Piatigorsky Seminar in Los Angeles, and Yale University, among others, on full-tuition fellowships.
Before joining the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 2013, deMaine served as the James C. Gordon Principal Cello of the Detroit Symphony for over a decade. . His recording of the John Williams Cello Concerto (Detroit Symphony, Leonard Slatkin conducting) will be released by Naxos later this year.
