Roseville Woman Charged After 3-year-old Boy Shoots Himself
Authorities said the boy grabbed the gun from the woman's coat pocket and shot himself inside a Detroit home on Friday.

ROSEVILLE, MI — A Roseville woman was charged after a three-year-old Detroit boy shot himself in the head in Detroit on Friday, Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy announced Monday.
Janette Ann Smith was charged with careless, reckless, or negligent use of a firearm by prosectors.
Authorities said Smith went to a home in the 1880 block of Lafayette to visit the child’s mother to pick up some food that was prepared for her.

Once inside the home, Smith took off her coat, which had a loaded handgun in the pocket, and hung it on the chair in the living room, authorities said.
Smith then went into the kitchen to talk with the boy's mother, when the child grabbed the gun and shot himself just a few minutes later, authorities said.

The boy's mother privately transported him to a local hospital where he was listed in critical condition, authorities said. An update on his condition was not known Tuesday afternoon.
Although authorities noted that Smith is a CPL holder, officials reminded gun owners that it is their responsibility to safety secure their guns.
"It is getting very difficult to come up with new ways to say the same thing over and over again. If you own a gun and you know young children will be in your orbit, secure it so that there will be no access," Worthy said. "If you are traveling with a gun, follow the law while doing so, and by all means make sure that children cannot get to it. Secure your gun and save young lives from death, serious injury or harm of any kind."
