St. Clair Shores Special Olympics Team Wins Second Straight Regional Championship

Basketball team takes Division 5 title

ST. CLAIR SHORES, Mich. — The St. Clair Shores Sharks won a regional championship for the second consecutive year, taking the Division 5 title at the Special Olympics regional basketball tournament held at Northville High School on March 5.

The Sharks defeated the Red Hot Comets in the first round by a score of 18-9. In the championship game, the Sharks came from behind to tie the Mustangs at the end of regulation and won in overtime by a score of 33-27.

Sharks players include: James Averette, Romel Bond, Scott Castro, Aaron Deskins, Joe Gasiorowski, Dwain Goodlow, Vincente Johnson, Andy Linsdeau, Stephen Mazurkiewicz, Suzanne Pauli, Sean Phelps, Todd Shields, and Josh White. The team is coached by Greg Mazurkiewicz with assistant coaches Margaret Mazurkiewicz and Steve White.

The team now qualifies for the state basketball finals to be held March 18-19 at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
