St. Clair Shores Team Wins Fight For Air Climb

ST. CLAIR SHORES, MI — A team of firefighters and first responders from St. Clair Shores out-winded their colleagues and other competitiors Sunday, winning the American Lung Association’s 1th annual Fight for Air Climb at the Detroit Marriott in the Renaissance Center tower. It took the six-person crew 37:02 to ascend the stairs, carrying 60 pounds worth of gear on their backs.

The stair climb raised $370,588 — about $36,000 more than the goal — to support American Lung Association’s fight against lung disease.

Teams rounding out the top 10 were from rom Birmingham, Toledo, Traverse City, Shelby Township, Royal Oak, Novi, Hazel Park and Bloomfield Township.

“It’s always difficult but it’s for a great cause,” Dan Sebastian, a driver/engineer of St. Clair Shores Fire Fighters Local 1744, told The Macomb Daily. Sebastian is a six-time climber in the challenge.

The St. Clair Shores team edged out — by 23 second — the Sterling Heights Firefighters Local 1157, which was defending its third consecutive title.

Other local teams participating included firefighters from Warren, Clinton Township, Eastpointe, New Haven, Macomb Township, Selfridge Air National Guard Base, Center Line and Utica.
