Woman Sentenced For Macomb County Crash That Severely Hurt 9-Year-Old

CENTER LINE, MI — A Detroit woman will spend less than a year in jail after she crashed her SUV into a Center Line home and severely injured a 9-year-old girl last year, according to prosecutors.

Family members identified the injured girl as 9-year-old Laila, who is recovering after she suffered spinal injuries, a fractured nose and a lacerated liver in the crash.

Caris Adell Wade, 21, was sentenced to 290 days in the Macomb County Jail for the crash. She did receive credit for the 65 days she's already served.

Wade must also complete 260 hours of community service and spend three years on probation, including mandatory substance abuse treatment and enrolling in counseling programs.

She cannot have any contact with the victim or the victim's family and must remain at least 500 feet from the victim's home and school.

The crash happened at 2:55 a.m. on Oct. 13 when prosecutors said Wade slammed her SUV into a home near the intersection of MacArthur Boulevard and O'Hare Street in Center Line.

Laila, who was sleeping in her bedroom, was thrown out of a window and into the yard, prosecutors said.

Laila's 22-month-old sister was also sleeping in the bedroom and was not injured in the crash, prosecutors said.

Wade fled the scene after the crash but was quickly arrested not far from the crash site, prosecutors said.

She was charged with reckless driving and failure to stop at the scene of a crash. She pleaded no contest to each count and could have spent up to five years in prison for each count.

"This sentence holds the defendant accountable while emphasizing rehabilitation and community safety. I hope she takes full advantage of the opportunity Judge Toia has given her," Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido said.
