2010 Census: Trenton Hangs on to Most of Its Residents

With the majority of cities in Wayne County getting smaller, Trenton's population dip likely won't reduce tax revenue for the city.

A population prediction in 2000 by the Southeastern Michigan Council of Governments showed very little change in Trenton's overall population over 35 years and the prediction, when compared with the 2010 census information, was nearly spot on.

Trenton's population has decreased from 19,584 to 18,583, reducing the number of Trenton residents by 731. This makes for a 3.7 percent drop in population.

Comparatively, , Trenton's population did not drop as much as some other Downriver cities. population dropped significantly.

While Wyandotte may experience some financial concerns from the drop, Trenton Mayor Gerald Brown said he does not anticipate experiencing any financial hardships as a result of the drop in population.

Brown said the state receives tax dollars in direct proportion to the amount of residents within the city, but the slight dip in population shouldn't cause any change in tax revenue for Trenton.

The SEMCOG prediction showed Trenton's population dipping in the year 2015 and then growing slightly until 2035.

The population of Wayne County dropped 11.7 percent, from 2,061,162 to 1,820,584.

Michigan is the only state in the nation to have a decreased population. The number of residents plummeted by 55,183, from about 9.94 million to about 9.89 million.

Because of the decrease, the state will lose one congressional seat, as it also did in 2000.

More detailed information on Trenton's figures will be posted as they become available from the U.S. Census Bureau.
